Next Generation PON

The FSAN Next Generation Passive Optical Network (NG-PON) Task Group has the objective of exploring the post G-PON optical access system aspects. The group aims at providing carrier class solutions, with the capability of smooth migration between system generations and the reuse of the “legacy” fibre plant. The first output of the Task Group has been the specification of the XG-PON1 systems, that have a capacity of 10Gbit/s downstream and 2.5 Gbit/s upstream, featuring a cost competitive compromise. Approaching the completion of its basic specification, XG-PON1 will be handed over to the FSAN Interoperability Task Group.

After finalizing the XG-PON1 basic specification, that is being successfully carried to ITU-T and standardized as the G.987 series, the group is now focusing on the additional features and tools for extending the applicability of the XG-PON technologies.

Moreover, under the generic term “NG-PON2″, the Task Group started an investigation on upcoming technologies enabling a further bandwidth increase and able to solve the issues encountered in the “1G” and “10G” PON technologies deployments. NG-PON2 will also study new architectures that might involve some affordable plant evolutions, to take the benefit of the maturing WDM technologies and the necessary adaptations for the access.
