The FSAN Interoperability Task Group has the objective of enabling a full interoperability of PON systems based on FSAN/ITU-T specifications in a multi-vendor scenario. The group has worked on the BOPON and GPON interoperability since the consolidation of the first Recommendations of the G.983 and G.984 series.

Main activities of the FSAN Interoperability are:

- Editing interoperability Test Plan on physical and TC layers

This task has been successfully handled in the past and an official ITU-T document is available on GPON technology

Work on XG-PON1 Test Plan will start in 2011

- Interoperability test events

3 events in 2010 focused on GPON technology

March 22nd to 26th in France organized by LAN

June 21th to 25th in US organized by UNH

October 11th to 15th in France organized by ETSI

Since june 2010, FSAN events are now open to Broadband Forum members, thanks to the efficient collaboration between the two Bodies

In 2011, FSAN will focus on the organization of XG-PON1 events.

- FSAN OMCI Implementation Study Group (OISG)

OMCI Implementers’ guide written by this group is now an ITU-T Recommendation

This group is now in charge of describing OMCI messages sequences for Broadband Forum conformance document (WT-247)

- Starting from beginning of 2011, the group will focus on XG-PON1 technology

The FSAN Next Generation Passive Optical Network (NG-PON) Task Group has the objective of exploring the post G-PON optical access system aspects. The group aims at providing carrier class solutions, with the capability of smooth migration between system generations and the reuse of the “legacy” fibre plant. The first output of the Task Group has been the specification of the XG-PON1 systems, that have a capacity of 10Gbit/s downstream and 2.5 Gbit/s upstream, featuring a cost competitive compromise. Approaching the completion of its basic specification, XG-PON1 will be handed over to the FSAN Interoperability Task Group.

After finalizing the XG-PON1 basic specification, that is being successfully carried to ITU-T and standardized as the G.987 series, the group will focus on the next steps including:

- the additional features and tools for extending the applicability of the XG-PON technologies

- improving the system capacity through TDMA solutions for higher upstream capacity on similar TC concepts.

Moreover, under the generic term “NG-PON2″, the Task Group will investigate upcoming technologies enabling a further bandwidth increase and able to solve the issues encountered in the “1G” and “10G” PON technologies deployments. NG-PON2 will also study new architectures that might involve some affordable plant evolutions, to take the benefit of the maturing WDM technologies and the necessary adaptations for the access.
